Changing Your Address
Moving to a new city or province means that you need to set up or change utility providers, change your address with service providers plus, you need to update the services and/or benefits provided to you from the various levels of government.
- Read your metered utilities before moving in/out
To avoid an estimated bill, read your meter before you move out and before you move in and provide that to your utility company. - Cancel your utilities
Make sure you cancel all of your current utilities. You can do this in advance and schedule the shut off date. - Set up new utilities
Take the time to set up your new utilities before you move. It's best to do this in advance to ensure that the utilities will be turned on when you move in. Please contact these service providers separately:- Shaw/Bell MTS for phone, cell phone and cable tv
- Bell for satellite service
- Rogers and Telus for cell phone.
- Local municipality for water and waste
- Manitoba Hydro (gas and electricity)
- Cards, licences, taxes and allowances.
Currently, your Manitoba health card and property assessment and taxation outside Winnipeg are covered by this service; please contact these other government offices to replace your government identification:- Drivers Licence and vehicle registration
- Car insurance
- Canada Revenue Agency (Income Tax, GST Credit, Child Tax Benefit)
- Employment insurance
- Student loans
- Apprenticeship information
- Retirement pensions:
- Canada Pension Plan
- Old Age Security Pension, Guaranteed income supplement
- Veterans
- Change your address with your creditors
Change your address with your student loan company and any other loan or credit card companies that you have. This is essential because missing a payment or two will negatively affect your credit score. You can do this by changing it on the form on your payment, online or by calling these companies on the phone. - Changing Financial Institutions
Many large financial institutions will allow you to move all across the country without changing your account. You may simply need to change your address. - Forward your mail
Fill out a change of address form at the post office. Having your mail forwarded will help catch any items you may have missed. This can also help with magazine subscriptions.
